James Loftus
Lieutenant of Operations

Lieutenant Loftus began his law enforcement career in 1996 as a correctional officer for Atlantic County Department of Public Safety and then the New Jersey Department of Corrections.  He graduated from the Atlantic County Corrections Academy and the New Jersey Department of Corrections Academy, Sea Girt.  He was hired by the Middle Township Police in 1999 and graduated from Atlantic County Police Academy.  He began his career with Middle Township in the Patrol Division as a Patrolman.  In 2010, he was promoted to Sergeant and assigned to the Bravo squad.  In 2012, he was transferred to the Special Services Unit where he remained until his promotion to Administrative Lieutenant in August of 2016.  In November of 2020, Lieutenant Loftus transferred to the position of Operations Lieutenant, overseeing the Patrol Division as the Patrol Commander.  Lieutenant Loftus has served in various special assignments during his time with the Department. Some of the Units he has been a part of are the Police Motorcycle Unit, Crash Investigation Unit, Hostage Negotiation Unit, Honor Guard, Bike Unit, School Liaison Officer, and the Search and Recovery Scuba Unit.  

Lieutenant Loftus grew up in Burlington County and moved to Cape May County in 1991; he currently lives in Middle Township with his family.  Lieutenant Loftus is a Firearms Instructor, Certified Crisis Negotiator, and Traffic Crash Reconstructionist.  Lieutenant Loftus has attended Atlantic Cape Community College as well as Mansfield University. He is a graduate of the New Jersey Chiefs of Police Association- Command and Leadership Program and has also completed the Federal Bureau of Investigation Leadership and Supervision training.

The Operations Lieutenant/Patrol Commander is responsible for many different things including the following areas; vehicle maintenance, patrol equipment (purchase, maintain, issue), POSS Administrator (scheduling/time off/OT, etc.), Review all Domestic Violence Investigation reports, Domestic Violence Coordinator, Manage Off-Duty details, prepare Grants, manage statistics, schedule training, Training Development Coordinator, Hotel/Motel Association Liaison, Assistant Public Information Officer, On-Call Administrator, order/replace uniforms, Field Training Officer Coordinator, Manage Class II Program, OSHA Compliance Officer, Special Events Committee, Municipal Court Operational Liaison, manage and conduct vehicle inspections, oversee the Dive Team (people/training/equipment), Crash Investigation Commander, Honor Guard Commander, Supervise Patrol Sergeants and Special Services Sergeant, L.E.A.D. Coordinator, Handle with Care program.
